Your Role

Reporting to the Haa Yatx’i Hidi Centre Manager, the Haa Yatx’i Hidi Cook is responsible for the daily operation of the Haa Yatx’i Hidi kitchen. The position ensures the center operates effectively in meeting the nutritional needs of infants, toddlers, preschool, and school-aged children through the provision of hot meals and snacks. The Cook creates and implements nutrition programs, plans menus, a safe, clean, and effective kitchen environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

              Nutrition Program and Menu Planning

  • Creates and implements a nutrition program for children attending Haa Yatx’i Hidi
  • Plans menus based on the Canadian Nutritional Guidelines
  • Ensures meals and snacks meet the dietary and developmental needs of infants, toddlers, preschool, and school-aged children

Food Preparation and Service

  • Prepare healthy meals and snacks for groups of approximately 25 children
  • Ensures that all food is prepared, stored, and served in accordance with safe food handling procedures

Kitchen Maintenance and Sanitation

  • Performs daily deep cleaning and sanitizing of the kitchen, including equipment, surfaces, and storage areas.
  • Applies the First-In, First out (FIFO) method for perishable items to ensure freshness and minimize waste.

Purchasing and Inventory Management

  • Orders groceries and supplies based on established meal plans and menu requirements.
  • Monitors inventory levels and ensures adequate stock of food and related supplies

Centre Operations Support

  • Supports the operational needs of the Haa Yatx’i Hidi Centre as required.
  • Collaborates with the Haa Yatx’i Hidi Centre Manager and staff to ensure food services align with program schedules and activities.

 

Essential Qualifications

  • Journeyperson Red Seal Cook certification and/or willingness to apprentice are considered assets
  • Valid Food Safe certificate
  • Valid WHIMIS certificate

  • Knowledge of safe food handling procedures
  • Sound knowledge of First Nations Culture and traditions
  • Basic computer skills to support online ordering, preparation of menu plans, and correspondence with stakeholders
  • Good interpersonal skills and a caring attitude, with the ability to relate effectively to children
  • High stress tolerance and the ability to remain calm and professional in a busy environment
  • Ability to work effectively in a cross-cultural environment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in accordance with C/TFN policies and procedures
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision and to take initiative when required
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently both independently and as a member of a team
  • Strong decision-making skills, including sound judgement
  • Strong time management, organizational, and prioritization skills
  • Good communication skills, including oral, listening, written, and electronic communication

Essential Qualifications

  • Valid food safe certificate
  • Valid WHIMIS certificate
  • Valid class five Yukon Drivers license
  • Current drivers abstract
